The Christmas we Get we Deserve ...

Greg Lake passed away recently.
You remember ELP, don't you?

Here are his thoughts about 'the holiday season' encapsulated in song ...

Look at the interesing commentary on YouTube.

Discuss in less than two thousand words, double-spaced and on single-sided A4 paper.

Then tear up paper, and enjoy the Christmas you all deserve!

RIP, Greg.

Being Friday the Sixteenth Day of December, 2016 ...

Being, also, the Club's FESTIVE PARTY!

Here's the Christmas Tree ...

Here is one of Angela's lovely flower arrangements ...

There was a raffle.
Here are some of the highly desirable prizes ...

There was food, but Dogsbody forgot to take a photograph!

There were many seasonal songs and there was competition to perform one of the nation's favourites ...

Jane got there first.
"I was going to sing that!" exclaimed Sylvia.
Instead of scratching out Jane's eyes, Sylvia sang about some red hair-decorations.
Bob joined in the competition: "So was I!" so he sang another winter song instead.
Les said, "But I was going to sing 'Scarlet Ribbons'!"
Eventually, the score was settled when Sylvia gave a charming rendition of 'In the Bleak Midwinter' on her instrument ...

Angela and Paul considered what might come sailing by on Christmas Day in the morning ...

Yvonne and Mike sang about a famous Dublin fishmonger ...

Mave indulged in anticipatory holiness ...

Gloria!

Howard lamented ...

There are no lights ...

Of course, given the very large attendance, there was much more music of supreme quality.

Before departing, Colin said thank you to everybody for everything.
Angela said thank you to Colin.
Somebody said thank you to Angela for saying thank you to Colin.
Lynda said thank you to Jane for operating the raffle.
Colin said thank you to Lynda for saying thank you to Jane.
Need I go on?!

Seriously now ...
I owe my very sincere thanks to everyone who throughout the year has given unfailing support, both regularly and however occasionally, to The City Folk Club.
I am privileged to count you all as friends, without whom this club could not exist.
THANK YOU!

And God bless us, everyone ...

Look, Max, you left this in the fridge last week ...

Text message to Max:
If you don't attend this evening, Howard
says he'll drink it!

Being also the second day of meteorological winter in the northern hemisphere ...

Cold winter is come ...

Howard sang of illicit dealings at this hostelry ...

No victuals were left in the fridge this week.

Being Friday the 25th Day of November, 2016 ...

We began with a catastrophe ...

"I never knew what was inside a compact fluorescent light bulb,"
remarked Dogsbody, rubbing the impact area of his scalp.

There was repetitive musical reference to inclement weather ...

"Just look at my closely-packed isobars," warns Carol.
"WIND! RAIN! SNOW in the North!"

Roger brought us a valiant knight ...

With a shield on his arm and a lance in his hand ...

Howard sang something about a timepiece ...

Deaths were minimal, but there was one train ...

Please, Mr Conductor ...

There was a brief, successful, (albeit circuitous,) courtship ...

"Now, dearest, which side of the bed would you like?" he asks.
"The middle!" she replies.

Thank you, Berry, for looking after us all so courteously.
Thank you to everyone who came along and contributed such wonderful music, and equally to those who listened so attentively.

All is well for Friday, 2nd December
                                                         ... BE THERE!

More advance information ...

Andrew has asked me to advise you of the programme for Chichester Pickers in December ...

https://www.facebook.com/chichester.pickers

They will be meeting at The Chichester Inn in West Street, on ...

  • Thursday, 8th December and
  • Thursday 22nd December.
So, there's plenty of good music around in the City over the next few weeks.

We wish the Pickers a very happy season.

ADVANCE NOTICE ...

This year we will begin the season of overindulgence early.

ANNUAL FESTIVE GATHERING

This will be held at the usual venue on
Friday, 16th December

Doors open at 7.30pm in hopeful anticipation of beginning music at 8.00pm.
(I did write 'hopeful' didn't I?!)

This will be a free event, (no subs pot,) but there will be a raffle, so kindly contribute some tasteful prizes, and bring money to purchase raffle tickets. Proceeds will be donated to the Friends of Guiding.

The interval will be occupied by consumption of shared food.
You know what that means, don't you?
Disposable tableware will be provided.

Otherwise we will be enjoying music and songs of the seasonal variety, (although 'seasonal' is not obligatory,) and humour in good company.

We have negotiated an extension to our tenancy of the hall until midnight. Music must cease at 11.30pm, thus giving us 30 minutes to clear up. Such extension is conditional upon the fact that we will depart in complete silence!

I hope we'll see lots of our friends there.

Being Friday the 18th Day of November, 2016 ...

The Guides have been busy creating festive decorations ...

Bob proudly presents his new big guitar ...

It's called Jumbo!

Phil and Jane sang about being pushed in the river ...

"Actually," said Jane, "I was referring to The Lady of Shallott."

"Be nice to Howard," says Berry ...

He's my last friend!

Quote of the week ...
I get the urge for going, but never seem to go!
(Some of us are familiar with such physiological sensations!)

Being the eleventh day of the eleventh month ...

We remembered ...

We grieved for the loss of a legend ...

Being Friday the 4th of November, 2016 ...

We marked the eve of an anniversary by celebrating this notorious individual ...

This House of Commons cleaner
looks a lot like Ken!

There were numerous collaborations ...

Marion displayed her micro-bass ...

Regarding October, 2016 ...

Well, there was much-ado about autumn ...

Leaves that were green tumble to the ground.
There was a 460 getting up steam ...

Tony took a brief nap ...

... only sleeping!
Ken took us to extra-terrestrial realms ...

It's a hundred thousand light-years side-to-side ...

Max and Sylvia defied oblivion on a fairground attraction ...

On 21st. Berry, in the chair, regretted that we would not be able to convene for Halloween.
In anticipation he decorated his table thus ...

Indeed, it was a near-record turn-out of wonderful musicians.
Bryan brought friends ...

Thank you, Bryan.
Thank you, friends!

Now for something you all need to consider:
  • Yes, we will be meeting regularly on all Fridays throughout November.
  • In December we will be excluded from the hall on 9th.
  • We need to talk about the approaching festive season ...
  • What date would you like a party?
  • Shall we hold a raffle?
Comments welcome, or email your preference to cityfolkclub@gmail.com

Being Friday the Sixteenth Day of September, 2016 ...

In anticipation of a repeat of last week's near-record attendance many chairs were arranged around tables covered with new table-cloths ...

Many chairs remained unoccupied.
"Who's MC this evening?" someone asked.

Whilst Dogsbody and Paul considered the MC issue, Tony facilitated a blue-moon workshop ...

Roger demonstrated his dexterous agility at the dusty end of the fret-board ...

"What chord is that?" asked Tony.
Roger gave an answer that nobody completely understood.

Dogsbody sang of impressment ...

There being plenty of time for conversation, we discussed Paul's assertion that the press gangs were historical myths, fabricated to frighten small children.
Actually, according to wikipedia, impressment was a common legal practice in England from Elizabethan times ...
"The last law was passed in 1835, in which the power to impress was reaffirmed ... [it] remained legal until the early 1900s, and the various laws authorising impressment have never been repealed."

After Bryan spoke in rhyme about drug smuggling, Paul wondered if such activity was also a matter of myth.
We considered the same at some length.
When challenged about the source of his information, Paul was forced to confess ...

Tony, somewhat wary of his reception in such an intimate gathering, resorted to French ...

PAS D'EAUE PASSANT ICI!

Speaking of myths, Mike P. advised against swimming alongside this manner of creature ...

The top's alright, but the rest of her was a fish.

And here's another myth ...

Southern Railway apologises for any inconvenience
to your journey caused by this delay!

Jenny waxed political ...

Fare thee well my dearest dear!

Such sentiment was not unanimously shared.

Roger and Mike went in search of Jesus on a train ...

"Give it a bit o' goat!"

Dogsbody, with a concluding song, stumbled on the downs but went home ... not rich, not poor, but exceedingly happy ...

I've got thousands of these ... or more!

Did anyone notice the spectacular harvest moon?
